Closing the Loop on Phosphorus

چکیده
The impending phosphorus crisis Phosphorus is a nutrient essential to all living organisms, and thus, it is essential in food production for humans. Although it is the eleventh most abundant element on earth, phosphorus never occurs in its pure form and is always bonded with other elements forming other compounds, such as phosphate rock. More importantly, much of the phosphorus in soil is not available to plants, thus requiring nutrient additions to produce crops. This nonrenewable resource is being mined at an increasing rate to meet the demand for artificial fertilizers so heavily relied on in agriculture. In all, chemical fertilizers account for 80% of phosphates used globally, with the other 20% divided between detergents, animal feed and special applications (such as fire retardants).

Structural characterization of d(CAACCCGTTG) and d(CAACGGGTTG) mini-hairpin loops by heteronuclear NMR: the effects of purines versus pyrimidines in DNA hairpins.
The DNA decamers, d(CAACCCGTTG) and d(CAACGGGTTG) were studied in solution by proton and heteronuclear NMR. Under appropriate conditions of pH, temperature, salt concentration and DNA concentration, both decamers form hairpin conformations with similar stabilities [Avizonis and Kearns (1995) Biopolymers, 35, 187-200]. Both decamers adopt mini-hairpin loops, where the first and last four nucleot...
متن کاملDeveloping a Mixed Integer Quadratic Programing Model with Integer Numbers for Designing a Dynamic closed-loop Logistics Network
Logistics Network Design includes network configuration decisions having long-standing influences on other tactical and operational decisions. Recently, regarding environmental issues and customer awareness and global warming closed-loop supply chain network design is taken into consideration. The proposed network for the integrated forward and reverse logistics is developed by formulating a cy...
متن کاملRole of the closing base pair for d(GCA) hairpin stability: free energy analysis and folding simulations
Hairpin loops belong to the most important structural motifs in folded nucleic acids. The d(GNA) sequence in DNA can form very stable trinucleotide hairpin loops depending, however, strongly on the closing base pair. Replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) were employed to study hairpin folding of two DNA sequences, d(gcGCAgc) and d(cgGCAcg), with the same central loop motif but different cl...
متن کاملCan macrophyte harvesting from eutrophic water close the loop on nutrient loss from agricultural land?
Eutrophication is a major water pollution issue and can lead to excessive growth of aquatic plant biomass (APB). However, the assimilation of nutrients into APB provides a significant target for their recovery and reuse, and harvesting problematic APB in impacted freshwater bodies offers a complementary approach to aquatic restoration, which could potentially deliver multiple wider ecosystem be...
